Due to its properties, silicone can be very hard to wash off, and may persist in the environment for a very long time. So long that the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has flagged as a candidate Substance of Very High Concern (SVHC) because they have the potential for being PBT (persistent, accumulative and toxic at the same time) and vPvP (very persistent and very accumulative at the same time). Being categorised as an SVHC as such chemicals means that manufacturers need to implement strict procedures to ensure that they reduce the exposure of such ingredients into the environment.
The ECHA on D4, D5 and D6 (commonly known as Cyclomethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane or Cyclohexasiloxane) has come into effect in June 2024.The restriction states that cosmetics or certain medical devices launched in the Europe area to contain more than 0.1% of such ingredients. |
Now, don't get us wrong – these cheeky cyclic silicone compounds have their merits and many practical uses. But, in our quest to keep our planet feeling just as good as we do, we've been thinking about what happens to these ingredients after they’ve done their job.
