Why don't we have a Bed Intentions Silicone Lubricant?
For one, silicone lubricants can go a really long way, and don’t wash off easily with water, making them ‘waterproof’. Because of this, silicone lubricants are perfect for shower or anal sex. However, this is proof that there can be too much of a good thing.
Due to its properties, silicone can be very hard to wash off, and may persist in the environment for a very long time. So long that the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has flagged as a candidate Substance of Very High Concern (SVHC) because they have the potential for being PBT (persistent, accumulative and toxic at the same time) and vPvP (very persistent and very accumulative at the same time). Being categorised as an SVHC as such chemicals means that manufacturers need to implement strict procedures to ensure that they reduce the exposure of such ingredients into the environment.
The ECHA on D4, D5 and D6 (commonly known as Cyclomethicone, Cyclopentasiloxane or Cyclohexasiloxane) has come into effect in June 2024.The restriction states that cosmetics or certain medical devices launched in the Europe area to contain more than 0.1% of such ingredients.
