It is a universal experience that hotel sex can be one of the most relationship solidifying, mild altering sex you can have.

There seems to be an unexplained correlation between how beautifully a hotel room is designed, and how good the sex is, especially when the bed is made with the crispiest white sheets, and topped with the plushest duvet you've ever seen. But not all hotel rooms lead to good sex, so this is how you can make sure you get the most out of your hotel room.

Booking a night at a nice hotel isn't just a place for you to lay your head for the night, but an opportunity to actually not think about doing the laundry for once, or be plague about the how the dresser in your room is the fugliest thing you've ever laid your eyes on but you have no money to replace it for now. There is always a list of things to do.

Desire has to compete with the list, and the list usually wins.

In 2022, University of Melbourne psychologist Emily Harris, with Sari van Anders and Aki Gormezano, put numbers to something many women already suspected. Among women partnered with men, those doing a larger share of the household labour were more likely to see their partner as dependent on them, someone to be looked after rather than wanted. That perception was linked to lower desire for him.

On holidays neither of you need to make the bed. For a few days the person across from you isn't someone you manage. You both start from zero, which may be the closest thing to equality some couples get all year. When organised right, it is partly a holiday from the division of labour. Book rooms that have a full service turn downs, if you are one of those people who are embarrassed about how messy your room looks, unpack you luggage and use their wardrobes. Get realllly settled the moment you step into the hotel, then order champagne through room service and relax because there is nothing else you have to do.

A change in scenery can also create distance. Esther Perel has spent two decades arguing that desire needs a little distance. Intimacy often collapses the space between two people, but paradoxically, desire can thrive in that space—when partners retain a sense of separateness. We are often most drawn to a partner when we see them from slightly outside: absorbed in something, competent, admired by someone else.

When you guys are away, you watch them ask for directions in bad Italian. You watch them charm a waiter, or read a train timetable with total concentration, or swim out further than you would. They are briefly unfamiliar, and therefore visible again. (But beware: if your relationship is not yet stabilised, it might reveal icks!)

Doing unfamillar things together can also build the bond before the deed.

The psychologist Arthur Aron explains why new relationships feel so electric. In the early months, each person is rapidly expanding the other: new ideas, new music, new versions of themselves. Once you know each other well, that expansion slows, and boredom creeps in.

In a 2000 study, Aron and colleagues had established couples complete a short, seven-minute task together. Some couples did a novel, mildly arousing task; others did a more mundane one. Couples who did the novel task reported a greater short-term increase in relationship quality afterward.

My favourite thing i find that really amplifies orgasms is your itinerary. Book at least 2 nights (because that will give you one full day) at a place with minimal plans - a dinner booking for each night will suffice. And a late check out. Oh, dont forget to switch your emails off.

This way, you can allow time for your body to down regulate, and release all the stress.

This is imperative because stress isn't only a mood. It's a body state and its reduction allows the body stands down so that desire can start to come back.

Sex also improves sleep and vice versa. A 2025 study by Michelle Lastella and her team at Central Queensland University tracked seven cohabiting couples with sleep-monitoring headsets over eleven nights. On nights with sexual activity, they spent less time awake and slept more efficiently. In a 2019 survey of 778 Australian adults, they also found that most people believe they fall asleep faster and sleep better after orgasm, with a partner or alone.

Rest makes room for desire. Sex makes room for sleep. Sleep makes room for rest. On holiday you finally get to see the whole loop running. And that is when you can reap the full benefits of your hotel and holiday,
